Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Risher passed into the arms of our Lord God on April 8, 2019, surrounded by her loving family and friends in her own home.

She was born on October 26th, 1937 to Elisha and Jule Shearer in Flint, Michigan. Betty graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and has degrees from Oakland Community College and Western Michigan University. She retired from General Motors after working both as a janitor and a UAW Employee Assistance Program Representative, where she helped countless co-workers as they dealt with life and work challenges.

Betty celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety on March 23, 2019 and helped hundreds of women and men get and stay sober during that time. Because of her personal and professional experience, Betty was a leader in the recovery community, serving on many boards including the Macomb County Substance Use Disorder Policy Oversight Board; Ascension Subsidiary Board and CARE of Southeast Michigan/VOX The Voice of Recovery.

Betty was known for her faith, a warm heart, self-deprecating humor, strong opinions and ability to cut to the heart of a matter. Her family, sponsees, friends and colleagues in the recovery community will long be sharing her stories and recalling her life with love and joy.

She loved the City of Detroit, Belle Isle, jazz music, art and lunch with the girls.

Betty is survived by her loving daughters: Lisa, Jennifer, and Jessica (Douglas) Robinson; her grandchildren: Peter, Christopher and Payton; and her great grandchildren: Aubrey and Vivian. Betty also leaves behind her sister, Mary Ann Shearer, and her longtime loving friend, Bob Hensley. She was preceded in death by brother Rodney Shearer, sister Patty Shearer and daughter Michele.

Visitation will be from 4-8p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Verheyden
Funeral Home, 28499 Schoenherr Rd, Warren, Michigan.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church, 1000 Eliot, Detroit 48207.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church. Please write “Women’s Shower Program” in the memo. Contributions may be mailed to the address above

Betty will be dearly missed. I remember in gratitude the generosity of spirit, time, inspiration and friendship she gave others. Our family will always remember these same gifts she gave to our sister Vicki as her friend and sponsor. I have never seen Betty more happy and truly joyful as in the recent pictures of her with children, grandchildren and Bob's birthday. She was a remarkable and giving person. I hope to see her again in the great reunion. Deepest sympathies to her family and dear friends. Sincerely, Sharon (Breznau) Czapiewski

Dear family. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. What brings me comfort in times like these is the scripture found at Revelation 21: 3, 4 where God promises to do away with all sickness and death forever. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and may Jehovah, the God of all comfort, be with your family during this most difficult time in your lives.
