Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Risher passed into the arms of our Lord God on April 8, 2019, surrounded by her loving family and friends in her own home.
She was born on October 26th, 1937 to Elisha and Jule Shearer in Flint, Michigan. Betty graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and has degrees from Oakland Community College and Western Michigan University. She retired from General Motors after working both as a janitor and a UAW Employee Assistance Program Representative, where she helped countless co-workers as they dealt with life and work challenges.
Betty celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety on March 23, 2019 and helped hundreds of women and men get and stay sober during that time. Because of her personal and professional experience, Betty was a leader in the recovery community, serving on many boards including the Macomb County Substance Use Disorder Policy Oversight Board; Ascension Subsidiary Board and CARE of Southeast Michigan/VOX The Voice of Recovery.
Betty was known for her faith, a warm heart, self-deprecating humor, strong opinions and ability to cut to the heart of a matter. Her family, sponsees, friends and colleagues in the recovery community will long be sharing her stories and recalling her life with love and joy.
She loved the City of Detroit, Belle Isle, jazz music, art and lunch with the girls.
Betty is survived by her loving daughters: Lisa, Jennifer, and Jessica (Douglas) Robinson; her grandchildren: Peter, Christopher and Payton; and her great grandchildren: Aubrey and Vivian. Betty also leaves behind her sister, Mary Ann Shearer, and her longtime loving friend, Bob Hensley. She was preceded in death by brother Rodney Shearer, sister Patty Shearer and daughter Michele.
