A Life Of Giving - Grosse Pointe Farms resident Nancy McCaffrey passed away peacefully, and in the presence of loved ones, on January 7, 2019 at the age of 82. She was born Nancy Claiborne Spruell on May 17, 1936 to Martha Lucille Claiborne and Dr. Hugh Spruell in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in Memphis and Russellville, Alabama with her siblings Martha, Hugh and Andrea; graduated from the University of Alabama; earned her Masters Degree from Michigan State University; married West Pointer William James McCaffrey in 1959 and raised four children. After 20 years of military service, including 15 residences both domestic and abroad, the family settled in Grosse Pointe Farms.
As a lifelong educator, Nancy taught at Dominican High School and 24 years at Oakland Community College. Her life of personal sacrifice and volunteerism included membership in the Bon Secours Assistance League and Meals on Wheels. She was a devout catholic, a bridge Life Master and enjoyed ballroom dancing and gardening. She spent precious moments later in life with her extended family, in particular hosting sleepovers with her grandchildren, taking them to the park and teaching them how to lose graciously at cards, checkers and board games.
Nancy is survived by her sons Bill (Patti) and Mike (Tricia), daughters Celia (Chris) Schmidt, Michelle (Pat) Bresser and by her grandchildren Keegan and Kendall McCaffrey, Keely, Quinn and Owen McCaffrey; Christopher, Casey and Cole Schmidt, Kelsey, Patrick and Brendan Bresser; step grandchildren Ashley Arena, Kelsey Rupley, and Ashley Schmidt. She was predeceased by her former husband of 33 years.
She will lie instate at 11:30 AM at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on 21620 Greater Mack, St Clair Shores, MI, at until her funeral Mass at Noon on Saturday the 12th of January.
Visitation will be at Chas. Verheyden Inc. at 16300 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Park on Friday the 11th of January from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with scriptures and words from family and friends at 7:00 PM.
