Obituary for Leona Anna Varty

Leona Anna Varty
Leona was born in Palms Michigan on July 7, 1922 to Theodor and Jennie (Schneidenbach) Moeller. She had 3 siblings - sisters Esther (Carl) Wolf, Mildred (Harold) Wolf both preceded her to their eternal home and brother Ralph (Doris) Moeller.

On June 8, 1946 Leona married Gaylord J. Varty at Trinity Lutheran Church in Forestville, Michigan. In 1948 Leona and Gaylord purchased their home in Detroit where they raised their family, daughter Carol (Vietzke) and son Ronald. In 1975 they moved to their home in Eastpointe, MI. In 1948 they joined Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, in Detroit, where she attended until her health prevented her from attending. Leona was very active at Mt. Calvary when the children were in school there she helped with the lunch program, bake sales, and was a member of the mothers club. Later she joined the alter guild, fellowship club, ladies society, and the quilters. Leona worked at JC Penney’s for 30 years and retired in 1984.

Leona and Gaylord were blessed with 2 children, 1 son in law Albert Vietzke, 5 grandchildren Dale Vietzke, Bonnie Gammerath, Laura Grammens, Brian Vietzke, and Jennie Yee, and 14 great grandchildren.

Leona and Gaylord enjoyed traveling together until he went to his eternal home in 1980. After her retirement she joined the Eastpointe Seniors where she enjoyed card playing and taking trips with the senior group. In her spare time she enjoyed card playing, taking pictures, quilting, and knitting.

The Lord called Leona to her eternal home on July 22, 2018 at the age of 96. She is rejoicing with her loved ones that preceded her: her parents, husband, sisters, son-in-law, and many Christian family and friends. We will greatly miss her but have the assurance that we will be together again.

Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life Revelations 2:10
